The Villa Peduzzi was built in 1909 and has remained unoccupied for 50 years, but now it is on the market. It has been divided into two apartments, including this luxurious five-bedroom haven. The villa retains its original Art Nouveau style and frescoes throughout. There is also an infinity pool with views over Lake Como. One of the world’s finest vistas.

This 30 bedroom mansion boasts its own bowling alley, roller skating rink and Olympic sized swimming pool to make it the largest family home ever built in the US. Time share mogul David Siegel and his former beauty queen wife Jacqueline began building the huge estate three years ago. But with almost 18 months of work still to be carried out on the property they have put it on the market at $75m. Experts believe a further $25m needs to be spent before anyone can move in.

It's architecture awards seasons right now, with honors and medals being doled out with what seems like daily regularity. Thankfully, the AIA's 2014 Housing Awards breaks up the march of zillion-dollar projects with something a little more real: Places where normal humans actually live.

The following ten houses are home to an incredible range of clients: fly-fishing enthusiasts, low-income seniors, skiers, autistic adults, and avid cyclists. Most of them are remarkably energy efficient, and a good number of them are built from the bones of older abandoned structures. They're all worth a look—if for no other reason than to remind us that architecture is for humans, as well as photographers.
